Have disclosures hurt Barack Obama? You bet. Has NBC, MSNBC or CNN reported any of that. Not if they could help it. What can be expected from a network whose highest rated star and political analyst is...Keith Olbermann! News flash to the Mainstream Media--REAL America is not orgasmic every time Obama speaks--we leave that behavior to YOUR "journalists".

Right on M L. I would also like to comment on the poll of whether Gov. Palin's family issues would hurt McCain. If Palin's daughter had an abortion just think of what the far left would come up with.
First she has a baby out of wedlock. If she had an abortion, they would cry well she cannot be a real conservative because she allowed her daughter to terminate the pregnancy and on and on.
I think this situation would help because Palin stands by her stance on Right to Life even in her own family. She practices what she preaches. No so with most democrates.

Perhaps you do not know what is in the minds of "REAL" Americans so much as you may think. Apparently, 38 million Americans cared about Barack Obama enough to watch his acceptance speech last Thursday. That's TWICE the number that watched Kerry's acceptance speech and far more than watched the opening of the Olympics......

If he cant manage to vet his own VP pick how can he run our country!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tom-286396,
Maybe you do not understand the concept of being informed (sadly, a common malady among many liberals). Many of us would not vote for Mr BO, yet we still want to see what is said to try to better understand the man.
Frankly, he gave a phenomenal speech, as did Hillary. Her speech, at least, had a purpose and some substance. I suspect that if BO wins, she met the terms of the "agreement" and will get her SC Judgeship.
BO, on the other hand, promised billions of dollars in spending, "fixing" everything from health care through education and even "saved" Social Security... And he did all this while promising to lower middle class taxes more than four times more than what McCain said he would do. In fact, BO says he is going to lower taxes for 95% of the population (I suppose he means we'll also give more free money to those who already pay no taxes, since it's hard to lower zero otherwise.). I sure feel sorry for the 5% of our population who will now pay all these extra fees. Mmaybe he is the "New Messiah".
I actually suspect it is more empty, liberal promises.
BTW, I am NOT a Republican.
Paddy
I watched it too and guess what, I am not voting for Obama either, nor is my wife or most of our friends who were over at the house watching Obama's speech that night. Funny thing is we are all registered Democrats!
Main reason, Obama is not fiscally responsible in the running of his campaign. 6 Million dollars extra spent for his "Coronation Ceremony". Now true tax dollars didnt pay for it, Lobbyist, special interest and corporations bought skyboxes with elevators and direct access after the big show to Obama. It's just that he thinks its ok to waste money? And I am sure he said lobbyists and special interest wouldnt be part of his campaign.
I told my friends if you want to see what an Obama government might look like, give your kid a credit card with no limit and drop them off at a shopping mall!
I think we will see a record number of "ticket splits' this year where Democrats vote for their local and state candidates and split to vote for McCain-Palin.

Let's face it folks- For the 1st five years of two illegitimate terms in the Whitehouse, Bush enjoyed high standings in the opinion polls. Based on their own selfishness, ignorance or bias - the vast majority of Americans looked away from the fact that the invasion of Iraq was uncalled for; The Canadians were the 1st responders to Katrina victims - by 4 days of Bush; Many scandals were being uncovered; So many more American children are being left behind in health and education; American jobs were being sent overseas; No one questioned what happened to the gold in the towers; He made no real effort to capture Ben-Ladin; His friends (corporations and special interest groups) were loading their pockets while the rest of us were being sent to the bottom of the tank. We need to let go of ignorance, selfishness, bias, and fear - and wake up!
Palin - pure and simple: "A last minute reaction by McCain after the Democrats remarkable convention, and then being denied his real VP choice by his party." He could have picked from many women who would have been noncontroversial, (foolishly) he decided to play the maverick card. Because she was not properly vetted, she is now in a position where it would be difficult to discuss her morals without bringing her family into discussions.
Ignore the signals coming from McCain if you want, the rest of the changing world (i.e, China, N. Korea, Russia, Iran) would love for us to continue being stuck-on-stupid! ... As they watch the fall of the American empire.

No McGovern Repeat,
I do not believe you are a registered democrat. If you were then perhaps you'd be speaking about Bush's spending and McCain's plans to do more of the same. A vote for Obama is a vote against McCain who will continue to perpetuate America heading down the wrong track.
- 2 votes
I was a strong McCain supporter. However with his VP pick I will now vote for Obama as I place a lot of emphasis on family values. A VP with 5 children, her youngest has Downs and she goes to work 3 days later? You accept the VP knowing that your 17 yr old is pregnant and will get ABUSED by the press. Typical type-A career mom who knows fails on both fronts: being a mom and the ability to lead a country. I feel sorry for Palin's children. I just prey her daughter is a better mom than her or at least puts a semblance of importance on her child.
- 2 votes
And there in lies the major reason our country is going down the tubes. You special interest group people--one issue is all you look at--never the whole picture. I don't like her family principals. Well, really they are none of our business. He's against gun control so I won't vote for him. So you revoted Bush in last time to keep killing our young children in Iran but that was okay. It's how they are in political knowledge and experiences that count. And lets face it Obama has none. Except how to spend money--look at his convention costs. A sweet talker but says nothing except we need "change". So is he going to steal Hiliary's ideas cause he has none of his own And why shouldn't the foreign leaders like him--he'll be a push over for them. I'm so tired of the press loving up Obama and putting down the Republicans. And I've been a Democrat my whole life. But I will not vote for someone I think is going to ruin our country. I'm not crazy about McCain either but at least looking at the whole picture, he's the better of the worst.
"tom - i watched the speech and i am not voting for him"
Same here. Many of Obama's supporters and the media seem to ignorantly believe that watching him speak constitutes support. His numbers compared to those who listen to McCain speak actually says more negatives about the Democrats. It proves that they base their vote on stereotypes and what the media says, since they don't actually bother to look at the Republican candidate or his real proposals. The fact that Obama's numbers on television are so high says huge things about Republicans. It shows that they are actually watching both candidates and THEN making a choice, as shown even here by those posters who watched him speak and STILL aren't supporting him.
To choose a candidate without looking at the other candidate says quite a bit about some supporters. Every voter should be, not just watching both candidates speak, but also reading their actual policies, instead of just hearing promises and accusations from one side. Anyone can promise, comparing real, solid and concrete proposals says worlds more. It is nothing short of complete ignorance to claim that, since more are watching Obama, he must have more support. Perhaps it is people trying to make an actual intelligent choice and at least look at both candidates. Perhaps it is people watching since they hope that, for the first time in his political career, he'll finally mention a real proposal instead of a promise and not only mention it, but explain how it would actually help the people when common sense dictates that the most likely result would be damage to all financial classes. More people watched him speak on television so he has more supporters...now that's a comment only belonging to those who look for any excuse to convince themselves that their candidate has already won. Watched every speech, and still haven't found any similarity to his actual proposals or actions, and can't afford to see the long term effects when he follows his "stick it to the man" and tax the rich promises, which the poor and middle class suffer from the most.
Palin has a daughter that was having unprotected sex. As a mother, she was either unaware or didn't care, or to busy to supervise her own family. Same for the father. Where was he?
Let's assume Palin was unaware of her daughters activities, and her daughter was simply following the values she was taught. (Abstinence, not birth control.)
Bottom line is that is the situation reflects poorly not on the daughter, but on Gov. Palin for probably being to busy to raise her own kids, or endow them with any values, or barring that, education on the simple use of a condom.
Now the family has to try and put a good face on it, and candy coat it for the eyes of the world.
This woman can't even run her family, and we are supposed to believe that she can run a country?! Not Likely.
If this had been a DIFFERENT family, the attacks on values and morals would just be getting started, and we wouldn't stop hearing the shrill cry for blood until the election was over. I cannot fathom why anyone needs to give this ambitious, gun happy, anti-environment, neo-con a break, and spare her the humiliation that her own children have brought on her.
Maybe she is hoping we were all raised better than her kids....

Clevella - I think your judgment of Palin and her daughter is too harsh...you know what they say about people living in glass houses? As a Democrat for over 30 yrs. and a mother of 2 daughters for almost the same amount of time, I do not look at Palin as being a bad mother nor do I see her as a hypocrite. It is very hard in this day and age to raise daughters with all the pressure they have from the outside world. I think the only reason my daughters didn't get pregnant is because they saw how hard I struggled as a single Mom after the divorce. You can not tell a teenager who is in love that what she or he is doing the wrong thing. I think Palin comes across as a very good mother and I respect the way she is handling the situation. In the end, you have very little control over your children no matter what kind of a parent you are. It's the unconditional support and love you give them no matter what choices they make that matter.

I have asked this on every single posting about this woman and no addresses this question. I know this has to raise eyebrows to all women and people in general.... Who in the media is brave enough to ask this very crucial question. This isn't a "sexist" statement.... THIS IS JUDGEMENT.. THIS IS POOR JUDGEMENT at best and I want this WOMAN a heartbeat from being president. A person that could have potentially endangered that "innocent" baby she states was a blessing from God. Where are the morals here. The evangelicals approve of this too? Come on guys let's be real. Something is wrong in this Coffee Joe.... Here is my question.
'Where has Bristol Palin (far right, holding Trig, with a ring on her wedding finger) been for the past year? Has she been attending high school? Or was she absent because of infectious mononucleosis for between five and eight months, as is now being reported on the Internet? Why would a 43-year-old woman, on her fifth pregnancy, with a Down syndrome child, after her amniotic fluid has started to leak, not go to the nearest hospital immediately, even if she was in Texas for a speech? Why would she not only not go to the hospital in Texas, but take an eight-hour plane flight to Seattle and then Anchorage? Why would she choose to deliver the baby not in the nearest major facility in Anchorage but at a much smaller hospital near her home town? Why did the flight attendants on the trip home say she bore no signs of being pregnant?' It strikes me as likely that there are reasonable answers to these questions — more reasonable than the only one given so far"
ML Fox - Wouldn't your preferred media source be the "mainstream media" if it represented "REAL America"? What is REAL America, anyway? I thought it was a country of freedom, diversity ,and tolerance.
Clavella - Clearly, you are either not a parent or you are a parent in denial. We teach our children the values and lessons we feel they need, hope they are listening, and cross our fingers that they will practice what they learn. That is the best any parent can do (even the 'Divine One' if you happen to believe in one - to each his own). PLEASE... lay off the caffeine (or meth) and stay away from sharp objects until you no longer hear the "shrill cry for blood".
M Muse - Who cares?
Why is all of the focus on the pregnancy of her daughter and not on the vetting process and judgement of McCain? Does anyone even care about the POLITICS - and I'm speaking of the real meaning of that word, not the smear tactics and diversions away from the issues - remember those? Economy, taxes, ethics, foreign policy, health care, etc...

The problem with McCain's pick is not Sarah Palin's daughter being pregnant. The problem is the SECRET!!!!!!!! I thought MCCain said his campaign would be transparent. Seems like there is a lot that McCain did not clue us in on. If he knew, shame on him, if he didn't know speaks to his very poor judgement.
Sounds just like BUSH/CHENEY.
- 2 votes
It was no secret. The secret is the denials Democrats are so fond of such as John Edwards, Bill Clinton and especially Ted Kennedy that has gotten away with murder for all these years.
- 4 votes
Come on guys. This is not about Palin's daughter being pregnant, it is about how it was not revealed until the information was leaked out. In basically every photo shoot, Palin's daughter stood with the baby and blanket covering her mid section. If this was public knowledge, why such an overt effort to conceal herself. If we buy this story, then we are open targets to believe anything that sounds good. I really dislike politics because it often brings out the worst in us. I sympathize with Governor Palin because as a mother of four and Chief Executive Officer of a youth development organization, I know how hard it is to juggle family and a career. However this admiration has no baring on my choice for President. The issues of this country are bigger than feminist rights, therefore we cannot use one "single" issue to base our platform for choice but what can the next candidate do differently to bring about different outcomes. Hillary, Barack and Sarah Palin have remove lifelong barriers for our future generation, and individuals will never understand the significance of this unless they have been a female or minority. Nevertheless, the issue is not about race or gender, but who can move this country forward on a positive note so that every American Citizen can feel that they have a fair chance in life.

Let's see, after repeatedly denying any rumors of an affair John Edwards admits to an affair. Then there's Joe Biden's commentary on a very tragic accident, alleging the driver of the truck that hit and killed his wife and daughter was drunk when there was no accusation no investigation and no proof of that issue. Then there is Ted Kennedy's Chappaquiddick episode, and I too am sad to see he is suffering currently with cancer. Oh, and let's not forget Bill Clinton's repeated denials of any misconduct in the White House. I could go on but my typing hand would get tired. Now if we compare issues, the issue of a political candidate's child having a secret versus a political candidate repeatedly lying to the public, the press and their families, I'd say anyone who is critical of the Palin's daughter is looking at the wrong issues in this election. What family doesn't have private and or controversial issues?
- 7 votes
You're right, every family has "issues," but THAT is not the point. The point is that Palin's 17 year old daughter's getting pregnant makes Palin look like a hypocrite, and the "family values" talk looks like a bunch of hot air, AND it pretty well illustrates that "abstinence" which she supportes, does NOT work. We've had enough hypocrisy in the White House for the past 6 years - we do NOT need 4 more years of it....
- 5 votes
Actually, her decision to keep the baby and not abort the baby is consistent with family values and values for life first. Also - terms for president are 4 years so I think that your math is off with your 6 year reference but I won't judge you.
- 3 votes
Dalton, you're got it right. What does a candidate's pregnant daughter have to do with the job her mother will do as VP? Some people are just looking for controversy and if they look hard enough they'll find something on everybody. The Democrats have certainly had their scandals. For example a lying, cheating President, a Senator who left a girl to die in a car submerged in water, etc. it didn't hurt them. Clinton's lying got him into the worst trouble. Remember the blue dress with his DNA? A pregnant teen pales in comparison.
With children born outside of marriage to celebrities, couples having children without being able to make a committment to each other in marriage, why are people surprised? Anybody heard of Angelina and Brad and others in the Hollywood pack? Our kids are exposed to it everyday. This young lady will marry the baby's father and I hope it will last. Palin's family is Pro Life and they've demonstrated it.
Thiis doesn't change anything for me. I will still vote for the McCain/Palin ticket. Another thing, the part about her husband getting a DUI 22 years ago? He was a kid. My son got one at 19 and he's a sober, successful, and I mean really successful, business man today. They put erasers on pencils, don't they?
Just hope you're not scrutinized as closely as these folks are. Would they find something from your present or past? You can bet on it! Wait for the explanations before you jump on the condemnation band wagon.
Having been in Bristols position (a teenage mother), I found my situation to be extremely humiliating, painful and terrifying. This is every teenage girls worst nightmare! My parents were educators in the community and OH MY GOD people can be cruel and the rumors were rampant. My parents were never-the-less supportive and loving and my baby was adopted by a loving couple.
I cannot help but wonder what was going through Ms. Palins mind when SHE KNEW that this would be an issue and for all the world to see! The LAST thing I wanted was MORE ATTENTION!
I feel strongly that BOTH SIDES of the political campaign should have left Bristol out of it.
If my mother were to have put me in my condition onto the world stage and in the medias glare because SHE was running for office or for ANY OTHER REASON....I would have never forgiven her.
I think that THIS is what most people have an issue with....not a pregnant teenage girl.
God Bless you Bristol

Dalton - "alleging the driver of the truck that hit and killed his wife and daughter was drunk when there was no accusation no investigation and no proof of that issue."
An "allegation" is an accusation based on belief not grounded in proof.
Why is it that every time Republican character or ethics issues come into play, there is always some there to cry "well, Clinton.... oh, remember when...." Very bad example to use in this context, Dalton. Remember, in that instance, it was Republicans making a personal (family) issue a political one for their own purposes. Why should his moral character involving a family issue be fair game and Palin's (not talking about Bristol's pregnancy, who cares) off limits?
Just an observation - I think both issues are a private matter and nobody else's business. Except that Palin is trying to push her reproduction beliefs on all of us. Look where that got her at home. Clinton never tried to ban oral, proposing an amendment to the Constitution to make it illegal while doing the opposite IN PRIVATE.

OH MY GOD! With all the critical issues on the table, this takes the headlines! GET A LIFE. I am more concerned on what is going to happen with this country when John McCain is elected president. It is not that I fear his leadership, it is the reaction from the loons on the far left. We need to come together, NO MATTER WHO IS ELECTED. I am for John McCain, but if OBAMA is elected, I will support our president with respect and honor until he does something to change that. That goes for McCain as well. Come on people....grow up!

I could care less about her daughter's pregnancy. What concerns me is the allegation of her abuse of power re: her ex-brother-in-law and the earmark of federal funds to her hometown. Why is the press concentrating on the pregnancy? Let's get to the bottom of the real problems!
- 1 vote
I am all behind Palin. I totally believe her when she says that she had nothing to do with it. From I have read so far she seems like a very honest person. That is what we need in the white house. Be it President or VP. I also like the fact that she does not take crap from anybody.

I am an Alaska resident who is not enamored of Sarah Palin. I do not live in JUNEAU (if you're going to use it learn to spell it). She has done OK for our state to date, but she doesn't have to do much to be better than our last governor (a crook and good old boy). She has accepted loads of earmarked money thanks to one of our crooked senators (Uncle Ted), which is something McCain claims to be against. She is continuing to perpetuate the "welfare state" mentality by handing out $1200 energy bonuses which is not an indication of being very forward thinking. She is no saint and certainly has not been investigated thoroughly before being selected to be a VP pick. Who gives a *^%& about her story? Plenty of hockey moms who have five kids and a husband who works on the north slope reside here, so BIG deal. These qualities do not a good VP make! She hates to admit any wrong doing and gets pretty testy when called out about any of the poor choices she has made over her short tenure as governor here. Open? No way! Transparent? YOU BET! She has a very difficult time separating her personal and official/elected lives and often crosses the line here. For the record I think they will find some shady things went on with the firing of Walt Monegan, though it was certainly her right to remove him from his position. Also, in my humble opinion the trooper in question is an @!$%# who should be removed from his position, but Walt Monegan did all he could do without stepping over the line. I think this choice for VP was a mistake that will come back to haunt us all.
- 3 votes
As Obama stated families should be off limits & especially their kids. The story about her daughter is irrelevant to Governor Palin's qualifications & character. That said, the "trooper-gate" deal is very relevant. As for your comments A C Dalton, while the examples you've laid out for us all are real ones & agreeably despicable at best, it would make my typing hand significantly more fatigued to type out all of the Republican elected officials who are under indictment or have already been convicted of various malfeasance's ranging from pedophilia to solicitation of prostitution to just bald-faced lying. Also what about lying us into an unnecessary war? Amazingly the Bush Administration is not under indictment for that. Why pray tell is it more o.k. for Republicans to lie & be sexos?
And this man is to take over the role of "Decider??" He probably forgot to ask an important question: "Um, Ms. Palin. Have you ever been say over the border to Canada, and even if it was for a vacation before you were elected to the town council, that is okay with me? How about Mexico, have you and your family had occasion to see any part of Mexico?? Ever met a foreign dignitary from anywhere, maybe Czechoslovakia or....oops, that country doesn't exist anymore my good Friend Lieberman tells me.
Oh I see, you say you talked to someone in India who helped you fix your computer. Well, that's good enough for me on the foreign relations stuff. Yes we did........we shipped that job overseas. Didn't need it here.
NO McCain....................and especially if this is how decisions are going to be made about the future of this country adn all of it's people.....No McCain!
- 2 votes
Mr. P-Man, When was the last time you saw the question on a job application: Is your daughter pregnant? Has your son gotten a girl pregnant? Why in the WORLD would you expect or think (then that may the problem) he would ask that question? Come on, lets be real here. Don't expect more out of people than you would expect from yourself, even if they are in public office. They are still human and have problems and issues just like all of us. There is no perfect family. NONE.

E Spence.
I agree with you 100%, I have no issues at all with the points that you make. Perhaps I made my comments on the wrong thread. Family issues should be off-limits here, they are not germane to the point of whether or not Ms. Palin is qualified to have her control of our nuclear arsenal.
I was responding to the facts that McCain has only met Ms. Palin once, apparently has not spent a whole lot of time getting to understand the whole picture before making a decision. Can we agree that these decisions are extremely important to ALL of us, especially right now. I stand by my point that this candidate for the second highest position in the free world appears to have no experience with respect to foreign relations. But perhaps that's the plan.........just continue to snub our nose at the rest of the world and do whatever the hell it is we want....... torture included.
Thanks for you comments, I agree with what you had to say.

"was responding to the facts that McCain has only met Ms. Palin once, apparently has not spent a whole lot of time getting to understand the whole picture before making a decision."
Just for the record, it was twice. The second time was when he invited her for the interview. That said, meeting a vp choice is not an necessity. Quite often, a President HATES his vp, and the choice for the person to be the vp. That is exactly why we have a vetting process, which is NOT conducted solely by the presidential candidate. The point is to choose the best person professionally, meaning based on reputation, resume, history, voting record, accomplishments, methods of conduct and operation, etc. They do NOT choose based on personal friendship, at least they definitely shouldn't. It wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference if the first time he met her was when offering the job, there's not the slightest bit of need to be on solid personal terms prior to offering the position. This is about offering a job, not asking her for a date. The vetting process along with the lengthy interview IS the entire process. Biden and Obama were also not on personal terms, this is only ignored because everyone knows of Biden, so they ignore whether they was actually any personal friendships between the two. Despite the mainstream media lack of attention, she is a HUGE name among Republican activists, for her maverick style compared often to McCain. She was my top choice a year ago before there was even any speculation or knowledge of who the presidential candidates would be. No doubt she was already on a vetter's roster by that time as well. It's about choosing the best professional, not the best friend. Few candidates really know their vp before offering the position, and it seems more often than not that they don't even like each other. McCain is one up on many Democrats AND Republicans in this regard, he actually likes his vp choice.
Denver P-Man - What the heck is E Spence talking about? I don't think he/she read your post before venting -- not to be confused w/vetting, obviously.
I, on the other hand, did read it. It would be so funny, except..... well, no. It's funny! I'm going to choose to laugh through this part and keep my fingers crossed that people come to their senses before November.
I have an idea, McSame/Pawnin' supporters, instead of casting a ballot, hang on to your writin' tools until December and send a congratulations card to Bristol instead!

Welcome to the real world. It doesn't matter who you are life happens to all of us. Sarah Palin's daughter's situation has nothing to do with her ability to be Vice-President. In today's society, with the information and options available to teens, getting pregnant is a choice, for whatever reason. We can teach our children right from wrong, and encourage them to choose right. However, as we all know they will do what they want to do. This is a family that has real family issues just like the rest of us. "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone."
- 3 votes
It is not a matter of her daughter being pregnant, (which by the way is bad), but the fact that she will have the whole world knowing of her daughter's irresponsible behavior. Do have three successful daughters myself so do know what I am speaking about. Do feel that if she cannot control her own family, how in heavens name is she going to control this country.
Can you control your Kids every minute of every day!!?? No, and if you think you can you are fooling only yourself! Besides, does it really matter that her daughter is pregnant?? If our "leaders" had to be perfect, with no family problems, or skeletons in the closet (no matter how small, or how long ago), We would still be searching for our First President!!!
"Do feel that if she cannot control her own family, how in heavens name is she going to control this country."
The actions of her kids directly correlates to her ability to control a country? I would hope she wouldn't manage a country like managing her own children, that's a horrible way to run a country. And ignoring that entirely, do you honestly think that a vp or even President could step up onto the stage and make every teen stop having sex? I'm pretty sure that it doesn't matter who is President or vp, at least some teens will keep getting pregnant. So not being able to stop ONE teen doesn't say anything about being a vice president, no politician will control every single human in the country. I'd pack up and run if they gained the ability. No politician can CONTROL an entire country, that isn't even the job of being a leader. Rather, it sure isn't supposed to be, and it wouldn't be her place to try. Entirely separate issue, not a single basis for comparison.

"that she was a member for two years in the 1990s of the Alaska Independence Party, which has at times sought a vote on whether the state should secede."
I would be interested to see how her ties to the AIP play out in the media and the McCain camp since a big ordeal was made about Senator Obama's patriotism and his ties to the Rev. Wright, etc.

The issue here is that McCain appears to be more interested in finding ways to secure votes rather than focusing on the important issues that will help to bring our country out of the situation it is currently facing.I do not believe they vetted Sarah Palin thoroughly out of haste to find a way to " energize" his campaign. The problem with that is,this should not be about his campaign, rather it should be about the best person to help move this country forward. This speaks alot about his judgement under pressure.I will support Barack Obama because I believe that he is truly trying to show the American people that this race is about our country first and foremost and I agree with his position on getting rid of all of this unnecessary negative campaigning which only hurts us rather than helps by distracting from the real issues.
- 4 votes
I agree with Lynette. No logical person, Republican or Democrat, can believe that out of all the possible choices for VP on the Republican ticket that Sarah Palin was the most qualified and/or the best choice. All signs point to the fact the McCain chose her because he couldn't have Lieberman AND because he wanted to give his campaign a bounce. This does NOT seem like the responsible thing for a presidential candidate to do. I used to respect McCain for forging his own way, but his campaign has "caved" to politics. Too bad, really. "The issue here is that McCain appears to be more interested in finding ways to secure votes rather than focusing on the important issues that will help to bring our country out of the situation it is currently facing."
I was thinking the same of Obama, with her promises that ignore ALL long term consequences. Talk about not caring about the damage he'll do to a country. Reduction of work incentive programs, universal government regulated mandatory health care at government inflated costs, corn ethanol and the high oil demand its production brings, robbing from the rich without regards to how this REALLY affects the poor and middle class, etc.
"No logical person, Republican or Democrat, can believe that out of all the possible choices for VP on the Republican ticket that Sarah Palin was the most qualified and/or the best choice."
Actually, she was my top choice, though I doubted she would actually be picked. It was a rather pleasant surprise. Being a moral Democrat (pro-choice, gay rights) and economic/business Republican (work incentive programs to reduce poverty levels, privatized SS and universal privatized choice based health care), she has been on the top of my list since being the top talk among Republican activists (though largely ignored by the media). Within the party itself, there's been speculation that she would be chosen no matter who was the presidential nominee for several months now. Her appeal to moderates was a hook they had to bite. Going after any politican regardless of political party if she feels they're corrupt, complete disregard for party lines and no care for the spotlight, not only no oil scandals (she conducted the investigations for the Alaskan scandals instead of being the target), but serving on the natural gas and oil conservation fund, regulating oil corporations while going after corrupt politicians...she'd be the best choice to stand by MOST Republican candidates.
Being COMPLETELY logical, she definitely IS the best choice out of all possibles, and there is little doubt that she's been on the vetter's lists for several weeks now. She was too well known among those activists, her accomplishments too well known (even while being ignored by the mainstream) to not be on that list. You base you assumption on mainstream media, on the things they choose to report on, instead of the actual candidate and her standing not just within the party, but outside its lines. I don't think there was a single better choice for McCain, and that's easy for me to see because I'm a very logical person. It only appears illogical to those who focus on mainstream media instead of looking at state accomplishments, records, and official proposals. You only get less than a half of one percent of what is happening in politics from the main news sources, and that's no doubt why you hold the opinion that you do. Sorry, but I have to disagree on your assumption.
Let me get this straight, Beckwith, are you the "moral Democrat," or is Palin? If it's Palin, she is not pro-choice. If it's you who are pro-choice, where do you land on other issues? How do you feel about gun control? What about the war in Iraq? Climate change? Do your views mostly agree with her's?
I still think this is a Hail-Mary pass, a desperate attempt to lure some of Hillary Clinton's supporters. To a degree, it will work. Some will support McCain because of Palin's sex. I believe most women are smarter than that, and will look at the policies and beliefs of the candidates and base a decision on that.

Almost everyone I know has some dirty linen in their closets, and the rest are just good liars.
For Ms. Palin, I suggest that when they talk about her on the tee-vee or radio, they play "Dueling Banjos" in the background (remember the movie "Deliverance"?). Did she originally come from West Virginia? (Just kidding! I actually think WV is a beautiful state!).
For Mr. Obama, I suggest they play "Girls ain't nothing but trouble" by DJ Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince.
This was a example of poor judgement from McShame, it is evident he chose Palin because he is in desperate need of the female vote. Plus he is assuming that the Clinton voters are so shallow that they will not support Obama, which means they must be bigots in the first place, if the only reason they voted for Clinton is because they did not want to vote for a black man.

You better watch that truth saying. We all can see the real deal, and we really know that there is still an attitude of - "if it ain't a white man, it better be a white woman next in line."
We are entering a new phase in American politics. Women want to be, and should be recognized more. McIgnorant's move may cause women to loose pace. His choice is to force women to vote for an unkown female running mate who they don't know - over the many qualified and tested women in his party. Actually, this should be recognized by nonrepublican women as a slap in the face. Republican women have no choice - they have to support the ticket for the party.

Oh please! I agree with another commenter, people are quick to judge, everyone has something in their closet, this has nothing to do with the campaign, it's a personal matter.
I was willing to watch Palin for awhile before deciding if I would support the Republican ticket. FORGET THAT!!! Any parent who would expose her child to this publicity because the parent wanted to be elected to another political office is not the kind of person for whom I can vote. Go home mother and take care of your daughter. The daughter does not need, deserve this national and international exposure. If Palin is this insensitive/ignorant of national exposure and how it will impact her child, than she does not belong in Washington.

I beg to differ - unplanned/unwed pregnancies amongst celebrities are CELEBRATED, not given to shaming the unwed mother. Why is this so different? Because she's a conservative, and that's all. Even those socialites are given fairer treatment than Bristol! Besides, Palin knew the consequences before accepting the nomination. And she knew her family would also be scrutinized.
And another thing, why didn't anyone tell Jack Kennedy to go home and take care of his children? He had small children at home and not one person even suggested that! That would be called discrimination if she was told that at a job interview! 'Oh no, she has too many responsibilities at home. She can't do this job.' Can you say EEOC?

Who cares? She's human. How many of us could look back and say we didn't luck out by not becoming parents prior to marriage? Get over it. The kid got hit with a night of bad luck. As far as Sarah, she's hot, she's young and she's a Washington outsider. What more could you want for VP or P? The pres doesn't make any decisions on his own anyway. And why is Johnny Mac going to die? Kennedy's the last pres to die in office. We've had a pres get lucky with an intern in the Oval Office more recently than having one die in office.

One must question Palin's judgement in agreeing to run for Vice President with having a special needs baby herself and now her daughter's unwed pregnancy. She will be on the road pretty much constantly for the next three months. How can she care for her own baby AND care for her daughter, who will need a lot of assistance to adjust to motherhood? Something does not seem right about this.......
- 2 votes
Wow, what an utterly sexist and contemptible thing to say. Shouldn't you be saying the same thing about Obama, who does not live with his family and takes no part in the daily care of his two daughters! Oh wait, he's a man! It's always a woman's role to be the one taking care of the children, right, Tom?
How much more would you like to disenfranchise woman in this country with your sexism and ignorance, Tom?
- 2 votes
How bout the fact that Palin returned to work 3 days after giving birth to a disabled child. A baby needs it's mother to survive (until the invention of formula, the largest scientific experiment ever). Or what about the fact that at the tender age 4 months old Palin feels it is more important to advance her career (VP nod) than to care for her child to give that child the best possible home. Maybe she will hire someone else to do it, possibly an illegal immigrant at $10/ hour (happens all the time). Family values???? What family????
And let us not forget that this was McCain's first really big decision. Republicans and Democrats all know there are others in the Republican party far more qualified than Palin. He definitely messed this one up. What is he going to decide for our country if he can't even get this one right?

I don't know, maybe the father? Roles can reverse you know, this is the 21st century, sexism is dead and all that until it's time to attack a politician. Women work, men stay at home. If she was a man, I'm sure that you would expect the women to follow and take care of the kids, without a question. Why is this situation any different, just because they switched roles? He's at home for the next several months, on leave from work. It's no different than if he was a woman and she was a man. He is with the kids, they also have things called child care nowadays that most parents take advantage of, there's no issue here whatsoever. It's her and her family's choice if they want to bring the family farther into politics. She already has been running a full time job, remember, so this doesn't change her time with the kids. It's just another full time job, if she loses this one she's right back to the full time one she has now, where she ALREADY isn't a stay at home mom.

What Govenor Palin's daughters does is family business. The MEDIA is upset cause for the first time in history, they did not know who McCain was picking and talking to. As for the American Press, please stick to politics and not family affairs. People are laughing at the journalists around the country, trying to make a family matter a political issue. To the journalist who went to Alaska to see if the rumor about the baby being that of Bristols. GET A LIFE!
Obama mentioned Governor Palin had 50 employees while Mayor of Wassilla. He now has 2500! How impressive! 2500 disgruntal Americans blogging on every discussion and trashing Govenor Palin and her family. They should remember what Obama's pastor said something like....Oboma will say anything to get elected, when he distant himself from the Rev. G Wright. After 20 years of hearing him damn anything that was white, with money and American!

I was 55-45% leaning Obama. Now it's 95-5% Obama all the way. First of all this chick is CRAZY!!!. The eyes say it all. How will she be "conservative" with 5 kids, one knocked up. And she's named them Track! Trig! The grandson will be named Hoof. She does not believe in evolution. That means she believes dinosaurs are our imagination. She does not support stem cell research. No sex education or contraception (sure would have helped Bristol). She is a right wing kook, plain and simple and I cannot back such a person.

Very interesting and food for thought. You dislike the candidate selection because of her children's names! You assume that her support of sex education and contraception would have prevented her teenage daughter from becoming pregnant ( I am more than certain she was there when it happened). You condemn her eyes! Wow - very impressive reasons for voting!
I am sorely dismayed at McCain's choice for VP. He is not representing the ideals of the Republican Party which I hold dear. Now that he has chosen Gov. Palin for her obvious appeal to women and NOT for her experience; we are losing precious time discussing the real issues that concern Americans. Instead of discussing real issues we are wasting time helping the public at large get to know her and her family secrets. I am not sure that this VP choice was clearly thought out. It looks like a gamble of long odds to me and I am not sure that I want to let McCain "gamble" with my future or my children's future.

Valerie, Governor Palin has executive experience that both Obama and Biden themselves lack. Palin has run Alask with a near 90% approval rating as well.
It's shocking how little experience Obama actually has; he has never run anything in his life!
In choosing Joe Biden, an admitted plagiarist ( dropped out of the 1988 presidential race in disgrace ) with a record of racism-- and a really bad hair transplant-- Obama conceded that he did not have the experience to hold the office of President based on his own experience.
Electing Obama would not only be a gamble, Valerie, it would make us an ObamaNation. Don't let that happen, sistah!

Don't forget Senator Bomb Bomb Iran on your list on candidates with no executive experience. I think the real shake up on Thursday will be when the Republicans realize Sarah Palin should be at the top of the ticket.

The article and the question are designed to reinforce the glass ceiling. Under the glass ceiling, being a mother and housewife is not equal experience to being a community organizer and the mistakes of the children are the fault of the mother.

MSNBC can not even hide its bias. Keith Obermann is chuckling with Michael Moore above Hurricane Gustav hitting New Orleans during the RNC and then gets catty on the Palin pick with the new host of another unwatchable show. Obermann was horrible on ESPN - he was always smug but never offered intelligent insight - no Dick Schaap was he. Now he is trying to keep Tom Brokaw from the MSNBC studios. Nice. How long will GE fund this losing asset?

How will she be "conservative" with 5 kids and not being at home at all with her being on the road alot now?
Who cares if Palin's daughter is pregnant. It is their business. I like Palin and think she is a great choice. She is a real person with real issues. Why would we want a phony who claims to be perfect in the white house? I certainly don't. I also like the fact that she hasn't been in Washington. She will bring fresh ideas to the table. Everyone needs to grow up and see that life happens. It is how a person reacts to what happens. That is what shows a person's true character.

The bottom line for me is that if McCain wins the presidency, Palin is not qualified to run the country should something to McCain. This pick borders on ridiculous. It was not well thought out.

Kathy, as I pointed out above, Governor Palin has actual experience serving in an executive capacity running Alaska. Obama does not.
Many believe she has better experience than either Obama or Biden as a result of her serving in the office of governor--with a nearly 90% approval rating as well.
She's bright, talented, courageous and, yes, more experienced than Obama.

And Obama is? Just what qualifications does he have. So far he has run a campaign with a 330 million dollar expenditure.
2007 Alaska budget was the 32nd biggest in the nation at $5.5 billion dollars in expenditures. (http://www.neilchilson.com/?p=128)
Lets review
Palin Budget. 5.500,000,000.00 (5.5 BILLION)
Obama budget 330,000,000.00 (330 Million)
Ok Obama is a lawyer? According to the US census 1 Lawyer for every 300 Americans
Has he ever owned a law firm? been a senior partner? NO
Obama Community organizer: Was he on a financial board, in charge of budgetary decision? NO
So I am trying to find some indication that he has experience to run a country?
I seem to be having a problem?
If qualifications means you know a influence peddler Tony Rezko who is facing sentencing on 16 counts of influence pedding? Obama is qualified.
If qualifications mean you know how to use the system to get black voter signatures challenged on the petition to keep other black candidates from running against him the 96 election? Obama is qualified.
If qualifications means that you worked for ACORN as an attorney and organizer and your campaign spent 800K with them this year and Acorn is under investigation in several states for voter fraud, Obama is qualified.
Yep Obama's got qualifications all right! JUST THE WRONG KIND!

Please tell me where are you getting your information? It is totally wrong.
Many believe she has better experience than either Obama or Biden as a result of her serving in the office of governor--with a nearly 90% approval rating as well.
You might want to check her current approval ratings. They have slipped to 67% since the people of Alaska have had more time to get to know her. Given her corruption and history of lying I suspect they will be in Bushland by the end of her term.
